In recognition of the increasing efforts to restrict books, those who write them, publish them or make them available to readers, five organisations representing authors, publishers, booksellers and libraries worldwide have issued a joint statement. This underlines the essential and interconnected nature of the freedom of expression and the freedoms to read, and publish, and urges governments and citizens to ensure these freedoms are respected in law and in practice.
Today, 20 March 2024, the major representatives of authors and publishers around the world, IAF, IPA and STM, and IFRRO, representing the collective management organisations in the text and image-based sector worldwide, are asking President Cyril Ramaphosa to withhold signing the Copyright Amendment Bill.
IPA's Copyright Committee has endorsed a position on generative AI & copyright, which had been developed by the IPA's Copyright Policy Working Group. The position reaffirms that the existing legal framework is clear. Collecting, handling, storing, and copying works of authorship to train AI models implicates the exclusive rights of authors, which cannot be ignored. Generative AI companies must license works that they do not own -and seek to use for their gain,- in the manner directed by the rightsholder.
