SDG Publishers Compact signatories

London Book Fair (5-7 April) was bristling, bringing back memories of easier times. IPA was also back and with a big focus on sustainability. From inspiring the leaders of the future through children’s books, to a challenging and thought-provoking Sustainability keynote. From a new InSPIRe report on how to make our sector more sustainable and resilient to practical panel discussion on what publishers can do now. All of this crowned by the Sustainable Development Goals Publishers Compact reaching and surpassing 200 signatories.

After creating a special task force to lead the association’s preparations for the European Accessibility Act, the German Booksellers and Publishers Association has been working with Fondazione LIA and the German Central Library for the Blind (DZB Lesen) and in January 2022 published guides on accessibility.

Brianna Walker, Head of Content Management at Taylor and Francis received WIPO's Accessible Books Consortium International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing on behalf of Taylor & Francis. In the second of our two interviews with this year's winners, Brianna talks to us about receiving the award and Taylor & Francis' work on accessibility.

Daniella Levy-Pinto, Manager of the National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS) received WIPO's Accessible Books Consortium International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing at the Frankfurter Buchmesse. She talks to IPA about receiving the award and the work NNELS does on accessibility.

The Accessible Books Consortium (ABC) International Excellence Awards for Accessible Publishing were celebrated at Frankfurter Buchmesse 2021 during a virtual session entitled “Accessibility Now: Will you be ready for the European Accessibility Act in 2025?”. Moderated by James Taylor, Director of Communications and Freedom to Publish at the International Publishers Association (IPA), the session explored the significance of the European Accessibility Act, celebrated publishers and initiatives that have embraced accessibility, and discussed ways in which different actors across the publishing industry can integrate accessibility into their work.

The shortlist for the 2021 ABC International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing has been posted. The WIPO led Accessible Books Consortium will unveil the names of the winners at the awards ceremony to be held at the Frankfurter Buchmesse on Wednesday, October 20, 2021.

Nominations are now open for the Accessible Book Consortium’s (ABC) International Excellence Award for Accessible Publishing, which recognizes a publisher and a project initiative that each demonstrate outstanding leadership and achievements in advancing the accessibility of commercial e-books or other digital publications for persons who are blind, visually impaired or otherwise print-disabled.
