On Sunday 28 November the Grupo Ibero-americano de Editores (GIE) held a hybrid meeting with publishers’ associations from across the continent. There they adopted a proposal to create a freedom to publish Committee.

In his remarks to the meeting José Ignacio Echeverria, Chair of the GIE said: In the world in general, and in Latin America in particular we are living through extremely complicated times, in which civil and social processes that we had worked so hard to achieve are being rolled back. Legal processes are being destroyed and citizens are not being respected.

This is why we want to formalize the creation of the Latin American Freedom of Expression Committee. In the face of the multiple attacks that writers and publishers are suffering, we become accomplices to it.

To paraphrase Enrique Krause, let us not wait until we lose everything, we must start fighting for it.

Echeverria also called on all GIE members to establish their own freedom to publish committees.
