The new tool, which involved publishers in the development and beta-testing stages, runs automated checks on EPUB documents to help check that they conform to the EPUB Accessibility Specification, producing a list of violations that need fixing. While not completely removing the need for human proofing, it also extracts data visualizations to aid the manual inspection process.
DAISY’s announcement notes that the tool works for any language and can be used at multiple stages in the development of a new publication. Built on open source software it can be used on its own or integrated into a publishers existing accessibility tools.
