Yerevan was named as the “World Book Capital 2012” at the conclusion of the selection committee meeting, which was held on 2 July 2010 at UNESCO’s Paris headquarters. The city of Yerevan was selected “for the quality and the variety of its detailed, realistic, grass-roots programme, focusing on universal issues, and linking all the aspects and actors of the book chain”.

On 14 June 2012 the 29th IPA Congress ended with a celebration of freedom of expression by the 2012 IPA Freedom to Publish Prize winner Jonathan Shapiro.
The same day, IPA's LIBS Committee launched the third edition of its annual global survey on VAT on books and e-publications.
Cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro ("Zapiro") has been named the recipient of this year's IPA Freedom to Publish Prize for his exemplary courage in upholding freedom to publish.
