On Wednesday 16th October from 2pm to 4pm, IPA will hold its Open Freedom to Publish Meeting. Our Freedom to Publish programme continues on Thursday 17 October at 1pm at the Guest of Honour Pavilion where Mahmoud Lotfy brother of Prix Voltaire winner Khalid Lofty who is in jail in Egypt , Ensaf Haidar wife of the jailed blogger Raif Badawi in Saudi Arabia and Burhan Sönmez from Turkey will join Kristenn Einarsson, the chair of IPA’s Freedom to Publish Committee to look at the situation in countries of recent Prix Voltaire laureates and their evolution over the last 4 years. The discussions will be followed by a vigil for 2018 Prix Voltaire laureate, Gui Minhai, who remains in detention in China.

The same day IPA will again partner with the Association of American Publishers and the Publishers Association (UK) to organise our Global Copyright Policy and Enforcement Forum from 3:30-5pm in the Rotunde. The subject will be Debating online accountability and will feature Lui Simpson, Ted Shapiro and Ursula Feindor-Schmidt will discuss online accountability as well as important law and policy developments for the publishing industry. Among the topics to be discussed: administrative and judiciary online enforcement procedures available across the world, challenges & opportunities arising from article 17 of the EU DSM Directive, the US Federal Trade Commission’s consultation on “Competition and Consumer Protection in the 21st Century”, and the recent AG opinion in the Tom Kabinet case on secondary markets of “used” ebooks

IPA’s Educational Publishers Forum will hold an open meeting on Friday 18 October from 9:30 to 11am. featuring presentations from China Education Publishing and Media Group, Pearson and the AAP.
