Following reports in international media (The Guardian, Le Monde) the International Publishers Association is extremely concerned about a new bill which, if adopted, will prohibit the ‘promotion of non-traditional sexual relations’. This legislation will undoubtedly seriously diminish the freedom to publish in Russia.
The 33rd International Publishers Congress was jam-packed with two days full of discussions, powerful keynotes, award ceremonies and a vibrant atmosphere of publishers coming together from around the world.
The 33rd International Publishers Congress closed with the announcement of Guadalajara, Mexico as the host of the next Congress to take place from the 4-6 December 2024.
Laura Prinsloo, who chaired the Jakarta Congress Organising Committee took a moment to thank all of the team that had worked over the last two years to organise the Jakarta Congress. She then announced Guadalajara, Mexico as the host of the 34th Congress and, together with Jakarta CIty Government, and Arys Hilman, President of IKAPI, in handing over the IPA flag to Hugo Setzer, President of the Mexican Publishers Association.
Receiving the flag, Setzer said: Thank you for handing me this flag and the responsibility that comes with it. Boy, you have set the bar pretty high. We are going to have to work pretty hard now in Mexico to produce such a fantastic Congess as this Jakarta Congress has been. I would like to invite everyone to the beatufiul city of Guadalajara from the 4th - 6th December 2024.

The Brazilian Book Chamber (CBL) was awarded the inaugural IPA Innovation in Publishing Award for its project Conexão Livraria.
The chair opened the last day of SCCR43 noting the sense of excitement in the room and the ‘spicy’ discussions around exceptions and limitations.
Education and research was the opening topic for discussion on day 4 of SCCR 43 with a Presentation on cross-border issues concerning education and research.
Day 3 of the SCCR was dedicated to the discussion around exceptions and limitations focusing mainly on the preservation toolkit.
Day 2 picked up from where day 1 left off with Member States asking questions of the facilitators of the Second Revised Draft Text for the WIPO Broadcasting Organizations Treaty.

Two years ago, on this sad day, our publishing colleague, Lebanese publisher, Lokman Slim was assassinated. Lokman co-founded Dar Al-Jadeed publishing house in Lebanon with his sister, Rasha Al Ameer.
